Prosocial: How Everyone Should Optimize Their Relationships

I went from shy, socially anxious to a self-assured prosocial person after reading one of Dale Carnegie’s books.

The book’s name was “How To Win Friends and Influence People.”  Over 30 million copies have been sold worldwide, and even recommended by Warren Buffet. Carnegie’s book is full of timeless wisdom and insights that you can use to bring out the best in your relationships.

In the first section of the book, Carnegie shared the fundamental techniques in handling people. He also narrates stories of people who achieved extraordinary progress in their businesses, politics, and career. Because they applied these methods to bring out the best in their relationships.

I will tell you the main techniques, so you don’t have to spend hours studying his book. Or tens of other relationship books.

Prosocial: What Everyone Ought to Know to Bring Out The Best in their Relationships

Technique 1:  Don’t criticize, condemn, or complain.

Do you like to be embarrassed or ridiculed publicly for anything no matter how wrong it was?

It is the same for other people. We are all creatures of emotion, abound with dignity and self-esteem. If you don’t like to be criticized in the open, why do you want to do the same thing to others? Whether in a group or with someone else.

Besides, criticisms are like boomerangs. They always return. It’s the wrong way to be prosocial

So, resist the urge to strongly criticize or rebuke your friends, colleagues, or people above you. It will always end in futility.

Speak ill of no man but speak all the good you know of everybody – Benjamin Franklin

Understand people first to be prosocial

Instead of condemning people, try to understand them.

Try to figure out why they do what they do. Listen to others and find out their positive attributes before you assume the worst of them. This is a lot more profitable and intriguing than complaining and criticism.

This will also breed patience, and kindness in your relationship with them.

TECHNIQUE 2: Give sincere and honest appreciation

There is a big secret of dealing with people.

Do you know that the only way I can get you to do anything is by giving you what you want? This is the secret. Companies use this secret to offer rewards to motivate their employees to achieve specific goals, enhancing their overall productivity and performance at work. Businesses also use this secret negatively, by using bribery to influence decision-makers and secure deals.

There is a quote by William James that resonates quite well with this technique.

The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated. This is a gnawing and unfaltering human hunger, and the rare individual who honestly satisfies this heart hunger will hold people in the palm of his hand.

To bring out the best of your relationships, always remember that you are dealing with human beings who hunger for appreciation.

Be careful of flattery when being prosocial

In a bid to appreciate others, please be careful of using flattery in your words and actions.

Flattery is shallow, selfish, and insincere. It’s like those wealthy and well-connected friends who keep calling you “Chief, Boss, Chairman” at every instance but disappear when you ask for their advice. Don’t act like them please.

In the long run, flattery will do you more harm than good if you want to be prosocial.

Instead, give lots of praise and heartfelt approval in your dealings with people, and they might remember what you said for the rest of their lives. And they can even bring it up years after you’ve forgotten it.

TECHNIQUE 3: Inspire the other person to feel a strong desire.

A way to influence other people is to talk about what they want and show them how to get it.

To do this, you must first inspire the other person to feel a strong desire. For instance, successful salespeople do this by showing us how their services and products solves our problems. After all, customers like to feel that they are buying – not being sold.

Dale Carnegie affirms this by saying that if you can learn this technique, you will have the whole world with you.

“People who can put themselves in the place of other people, who can understand the workings of their minds, need never worry about what the future has in store for them.” – Owen D.Young.

Put yourself in their shoes.

If there is any one secret of success, it will be Empathy.

It lies in your ability to get the other person’s point of view and see things from that person’s angle as well as from your own. The next time you want to persuade someone to do something – pause and ask yourself: How can I make this person want to do it?

Constantly asking and answering this question will bring out the best of your relationships.

The world is full of people who are grabbing and self-seeking. So the rare individual who unselfishly tries to serve others has an enormous advantage. He has little competition.

JUST A RECAP

Here is the checklist to navigating the journey of life with stronger relationships and building more meaningful connections:

  • Technique 1: Don’t criticize, condemn, or complain.
  • Understand people first.
  • Technique 2: Give honest and sincere appreciation.
  • Be careful of Flattery.
  • Technique 3: Inspire the other person to feel a strong desire.
  • Put yourself in their shoes.

That’s it. You just learned everything you need in maximizing your relationships. You are welcome.

Become Your Highest Self: 19 Nuggets of Wisdom for the Journey Ahead

I wrote this in my journal over a year ago, but it’s evergreen and relevant today. It’s a letter from your future self.

Dear Present Me,

This is you in 10 years and I’m here to offer you some advice. After all, I’m now stronger, healthier, happier, wiser, wealthier, more attractive and more fulfilled. So here are the things you need to start doing to become me. Which means the ultimate successful you.

WHAT YOU SHOULD START DOING

1. Take care of your skin because outward appearance matters too.

2. Dress the way you want to be addressed. Dress casually (in customised tees) and good shoes. Dress in suits to public events to boost your personal brand and public presence.

3. Take your prayer life seriously because it is the blessing of the Lord that makes one rich and adds no sorrow to it. That’s the blessing currently in my life.

4. Study and meditate on your Bible more often. Day and night. It will give you wisdom, clarity on the paths you are currently on.

5. Take your money making ventures more seriously. Money is not the purpose of man but it facilitates man’s purpose.

6. Cultivate healthy relationship with people with positive vibes. This is one of the reasons I’m still happy today.

7. Keep setting those goals and make sure you achieve them. Let these goals cover all sectors of your life. It paid off in mine.

8. Those books you’re reading. Keep reading them. Study them with the intent of applying the four tenets of learning. Read to Know. Read to Do. Read to Be. Read to live together. This applies for any other thing you’re learning too.

9. Please, I need you to be consistent. Keep showing up. It will be hard in the beginning for you, but it turns to an effortless habit for me.

10. Don’t be over anxious too at times. Worry won’t get you to where I am now. Smile. Laugh. Then Do. The Doing part removes the anxiety and worry.

11. Focus on a single craft before moving to the next. Master its art, science and business before jumping to your next interest. Don’t forget this. This is how I became so successful. Don’t forget to spread like a Palm tree. Very important.

WHAT YOU SHOULD STOP DOING

12. Stop being lazy. You’re talented and creative. But this will only show if you put hardwork and consistency in whatever you do and whoever you meet.

13. Remove shame and ideology of “what people will say.” Once broken, you will gradually become like me.

14. Stop going small in your dreams and goals. Go big. Shamelessly with your knowledge, airtime, money and everything you got.

15. Stop waiting for the right moment. I know you. You do this a lot.

16. Stop watching porn, dear. You’re me. Stopping this will improve your sexual life and cleanse your thoughts. Keep your sexual energy for your partner.

17. Stop being distracted. Social media. Movies. Anime. Other people’s work in charity form. Do what is important first, before doing the next.

18. Stop being nonchalant about your health, spirituality, and body appearance. Though it may matter a little compared to what you’re feeding your mind. But it matters nonetheless.

19. Stop seeking perfection all the time. Always find a balance between Creativity and perfection.

I hope you take my advice. I wish you all the best as you grow and thrive to become your highest.

The Paradoxes and Parodies of Life: How They Celebrate and Mess With You

Is all this living really worth dying for?

As a millennial trying to live life to the fullest or seeking your inner potential; this question might have crossed your mind in one form or the other.

There are so many theories, philosophies and principles on how to live a happy, successful and content life.

For instance, here are the most baffling concepts of life:

GOD, UNIVERSE AND YOU

When you were young, Religion made it easier to acknowledge the fact that God gave his only begotten son to die for your sins; but as time comes and knowledge creeps in, you wonder if God created millions of stars, planets, and galaxies just to have a personal relationship with you.

Does this statement strengthen or weaken your belief system?

One minute, you’re taught to be powerful and beckon on the power of the Universe to help you. The other minute, you are confused, bewildered and pondering on how in reality, you are just an insignificant speck in a planet amongst millions of other planets locked in galaxies.

TODAY, TOMORROW AND YOU

Make Today count. Live life to the fullest. Sorry about Today’s troubles because Tomorrow will take care of itself. But the next day, you are asked to have self-control. Sacrifice Today to enjoy tomorrow’s rewards. Invest in Today to reap tomorrow. It’s absurd.

Or is it about gratification?

Delay instant gratification to enjoy future benefits but the world revolves so fast you might not have the time to look up and see those beautiful moments.

KNOWLEDGE, IGNORANCE AND YOU

Then when you try to find out for yourself, the confusion simply expands. The more you seek, the more you find. The more you get clarity, the more you get confusion.

The famous philosopher Socrates once said, ” A man who admits he knows nothing knows something himself.”

This then leads to the path of ignorance. There’s a popular adage that says “Ignorance is bliss”. Does this mean you stay ignorant and enjoy the bliss that comes with it.

But life is not fair. Because Success is also part of this unbalanced equation.

SUCCESS, FAILURE AND YOU

Now, let’s take a look at Success itself. Have you realised anytime you remember your past successes, it’s the struggles that play out in your head first. When someone asks you about your triumphs, you start by narrating the trials and troubles you passed through to triumph.

All of a sudden, you will realise Success is not a final destination. Success can become failure over time when laziness and sluggishness take over. Because Success is simply overcoming failure at that particular time.

This brings us to the final complexity of life. The topic young people are always scared of talking about.

LIFE, DEATH AND YOU

You only know if you’ve lived a good life when death comes. Because it’s Death that gives life meaning. The shadow of death gives life its potential for meaning.

For instance, Eternity (infinite time) only makes sense and rewarding because we’re given a short time and brief lifespan here on Earth. Immortality becomes an ultimate goal only after we realise how fleeting and fragile life can be as mortals.

Now.. The Big Question Is…

WHAT IS THE KEY TO LIVING A SUCCESSFUL LIFE?

When you meet your elders, they tell you the same thing:

BALANCE. They would say Life is Balance. Good overcomes Bad in the long run. Obey the Ying Yang philosophy. Obey the law of Karma which says you reap where you sow.

However, here is the truth. The saying of the elders obviously does not work every time.

Because Life is not a Balance. It’s a PARADOX.

REAL LIFE AND YOU

Life was made tangible by an intangible force. Reality is first brought to life by Faith. Physical bodies moved by souls and spirits. Complex physical actions performed by simple disembodied thoughts.

Logic clearly does not work here. Because everything you relate to life revolves around contradictory yet interrelated elements. And these elements exist simultaneously and persist over time. Because the paradoxes of life make existence a parody on its own.

CROWNS, CHOICES AND YOU

So here’s what I believe:

You have to choose a side. You’re either yin or yang. There is no in-between. There is no fence to sit upon as you live through life because the fence is the most dangerous place to stay while living.

As you get close till the end of this post, I hope you already know there is no single formula to living a happy, content and successful life.

Personally,

I believe in God. Because he framed this world with his words.
I believe in Faith. Because without this virtue, it’s impossible to please God.
I believe in Tomorrow. Because God has taken care of me today.
I believe in Knowledge. Because it sharpens my core values of curiousity and creativity.

So here is the answer to the question at the beginning of this post:

“Is all this living worth dying for?”

Yes, it is. As long as you hold your beliefs, values and attitudes firmly.

Now is your time to answer.

What do you believe?
